The propaganda station that became the most watched “news” channel in the 24 hour news wars was almost exclusively right leaning and full on right wing commentary-often pawned off as balanced. One liberal pundit made every effort he good to show the folks watching Fox News that liberals were not evil. Alan Colmes died today. He was 66 years old. Often dismissed as not really a liberal-since he cashed Rupert Murdoch checks and worked for Roger Ails, Alan would argue against one of the most mean-spirited so-called conservatives on television.
Born in New York, NY in 1950 Alan grew up to be a radio host, an author and a Fox News pundit. His book Red, White & Liberal: How Left Is Right and Right Is Wrong was a great read. Alan had a way of hitting hard with wit and humor. And unlike most liberals, he was heard by conservative viewers who wouldn’t otherwise listen to a different position. I highly recommend reading it because the political cycle repeats itself and there will be life after Trump.
Colmes was hitting hard right through the 2016 election. He defended Hillary Clinton on critics accusations surrounding her email server. When Fox News Host tried to compare Clinton with former General David Petraeus, Colmes rightly pointed out that Patraeus, “…knowingly told a mistress what he knew to be classified information.” He also cornered Republican Representative Brian Babin into defending candidate Donald Trump’s outburst during a debate where he called the former First Lady of the United States, New York Senator and Secretary of State, a “Nasty Woman.” Colmes asked Babin if the comment had been appropriate and Babin’s response made national news and uniquely framed the position of Republicans when it comes to women: “I think sometimes a lady needs to be told when she’s being nasty.”
So, when you think about Alan Colmes, remember he resided in the belly of the beast and as far as the world of politics goes, he was a force to be reckoned with. Rest in Piece Alan. Thank you for your service to the cause of those of us left of center.
